Social media influencer Urfi Javed recently announced her intention to undergo breast enhancement surgery with silicone implants, despite medical advice highlighting potential risks and complications. This decision has sparked concerns about the message it sends to young girls struggling with body image, potentially fostering unrealistic expectations while neglecting critical health information.
Dr. Rohan Khandelwal, oncologist and head of the Breast Centre at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, discussed the hidden dangers of silicone implants, debunking common myths and presenting safer alternatives.
One prevalent myth is that silicone implants are entirely safe. While many experience successful outcomes, complications such as infections, capsular contracture, and implant ruptures can arise. These issues may lead to pain, inflammation, and even a condition known as breast implant illness (BII), which manifests as systemic symptoms like fatigue and joint pain. Moreover, implants can obscure mammogram results, complicating breast cancer detection and posing a rare risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
Another misconception is that silicone implants are designed to last a lifetime. In reality, most require replacement every 10 to 15 years, and complications may necessitate earlier removal. Multiple surgeries increase the risk of damaging breast tissue, leading to complications in healing and altered breast shape, along with emotional challenges such as anxiety and depression linked to fluctuating body image.
Additionally, Dr. Khandelwal emphasizes that implants are not the only option for breast enhancement. Techniques such as fat grafting, which uses the patient’s own fat tissue, offer safer alternatives with more natural results and a lower risk of complications.
Finally, silicone implants should be considered carefully, particularly for medical necessity, informed decision-making, and ensuring the procedure is performed by a qualified surgeon in a reputable facility. While they may provide aesthetic benefits, understanding the associated risks is essential for anyone considering this route.
