EyeCon 2024, held from September 27-28, recognized three outstanding residents in the field of eye care with the Visionary in Eye Care Resident Recognition Award. This year’s honors included categories for Best in Optometry, Best in Ophthalmology, and Best in Retina, celebrating the significant contributions of these residents to their institutions.
Award Recipients:
Best in Ophthalmology: Anupam Garg, MD, PhD, Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins
Best in Optometry: Khanh Hoang, OD, Omni Eye Services of Atlanta
Best in Retina: Shail P. Patel, MD, Nassau University Medical Center
Following the awards presentation, the winners shared their thoughts in an interview with Sheryl Stevenson, group editorial director of the Eye Care Network.
Anupam Garg, MD, PhD, expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a huge honor to receive the Best in Ophthalmology award from the Ophthalmology Times. I want to thank my wife, Ege, my program director Dr. Woreta, and my chair Dr. McDonnell for their support throughout my residency. This experience has been rewarding due to the incredible colleagues and staff at Wilmer. Residency is challenging, but the support I’ve received has made it a great journey.”
Khanh Hoang, OD, shared his appreciation, saying, “I’m very honored to receive the Visionary in Eye Care Resident Recognition. I want to thank Dr. Paul Ajamian for nominating me and for his mentorship at Omni Eye Services of Atlanta. While this award bears my name, it truly reflects the collective efforts of my co-residents, who have all contributed to this achievement.”
Shail P. Patel, MD, added his heartfelt thanks, stating, “I’m incredibly honored to receive this award. A big thank you to the faculty and mentors who have guided me throughout my journey. This achievement is also dedicated to my family and friends who support me every day.”
The meeting’s unique dual-track format promotes collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists, fostering an environment aimed at advancing the eye care industry.
EyeCon 2024 served as a platform for recognizing excellence in eye care and encouraging continued cooperation among eye care professionals.
