Actress Sarah Annett, known for her work alongside Oscar winners Dame Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent, has expressed gratitude to a Newcastle eye clinic for restoring her vision. Following her success in the 2020 comedy-drama The Duke, which tells the story of Kempton Bunton, Annett noticed her right eye’s vision beginning to blur.
At just 52, she was diagnosed with a cataract, a condition that surprised specialists given her age and the perfect vision in her left eye. With no recent head trauma or steroid use, her diagnosis was unexpected.
Annett sought treatment at Newmedica Newcastle’s eye clinic, which offers NHS and private cataract surgeries. “I was so nervous before the surgery; I hate anything being done to my eyes,” she admitted. However, she found the clinic staff reassuring and professional. “The surgery was quick and painless, and my sight is now crystal clear. I call it my bionic eye.”
Following her successful surgery, Annett is set to star in the upcoming ITV drama I Fought The Law, alongside Sheridan Smith, which focuses on Ann Ming’s real-life fight for justice regarding her daughter’s murder.
Encouraging others to pursue necessary eye surgeries, Annett reflected, “Just because you don’t fit the typical profile for cataracts doesn’t mean you won’t get them. It’s life-changing.”
Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr. Ayad Shafiq emphasized the importance of not delaying cataract treatment, stating, “The surgery is quick, painless, and can significantly improve daily life, enabling people to maintain their independence.”
