Rising Mexican star Yeri Mua is making waves with her new music video, “Traka,” where she addresses her critics while celebrating her individuality. The video opens with Mua confidently singing, “Got my body done / The doctor did a great job,” a nod to her unapologetic embrace of her cosmetic surgeries. Known for her engaging social media presence, Mua has built a substantial following by candidly discussing various topics, including her experiences with plastic surgery.
In a recent statement, Mua described “Traka” as a satirical response to the negativity she has faced. “It’s a satire on all the hate I’ve received and all the things that people have said about me,” she explained. “I’m going to keep being myself, and they can keep fighting among themselves.” This marks her first release under Sony Music México, signaling a new chapter in her evolving career.
Born Yeri Cruz Varela in Veracruz, Mexico, Mua’s fascination with makeup began at an early age. Inspired by YouTube tutorials, she pursued cosmetology courses at 15 and quickly transitioned to creating her own makeup videos. As she gained prominence as a social media influencer, she also navigated the challenges that come with growing up in the public eye.
Reflecting on her journey, Mua acknowledged the impact of social media on self-esteem. “Being a very young and stupid person on social media, I’ve made many mistakes,” she admitted. “Your self-esteem can easily be destroyed on social media. It could be an ugly comment that makes you crack. What has helped me the most is going to therapy, seeing a psychiatrist, and the support of my family.”
Today, Mua boasts over 12 million followers on Instagram and 24 million on TikTok. At just 22 years old, she embraces her identity and draws inspiration from Y2K icons like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Known for her bold fashion choices and lively discussions on love and relationships, Mua’s livestreams often reflect her unfiltered persona.
One topic Mua addresses openly is plastic surgery. She has shared her experiences with procedures such as rhinoplasty, liposuction, and breast implants, even documenting her recovery process on social media. Mua emphasizes that she does not advocate for cosmetic surgery but rather seeks to destigmatize the conversation surrounding it.
“Before I had any surgeries done, I believed those people I followed on Instagram were all natural, and that traumatized me,” she recalled. “When I realized that everyone goes to the operating room, but no one says anything, that made me upset. I said, ‘When I have something done, I’m going to talk about it.'”
According to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Latin America ranks high in plastic surgery rates, with countries like Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil leading the way. Mua sees this trend as prevalent among Latinas, who often face stereotypes regarding body image. Other high-profile figures, such as Cardi B and Anitta, have similarly opened up about their procedures.
“There’s a lot of people trying to sell products online that promise you will look like so-and-so celebrity when that’s not the case,” she stated. “There’s dangers in hiding that. If you’re going to have something done, be truthful about it.”
Mua’s authenticity extends beyond her social media presence to her music career, where she has gained over 4.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. With catchy reggaeton tracks like “Linea Del Perreo,” “Brattiputty,” and “Chupon,” she is at the forefront of the emerging reggaetón Mexa scene, which features explicit lyrics infused with Mexican slang.
“Just like how my personality is very crazy and vulgar on social media, that’s who Yeri Mua is in music as well,” she explained. “I talk freely about my sexuality. If they want to cancel me, they can, but I’m going to do what I can to break stigmas.”
After collaborating with stars like J Balvin and Kenia Os, Mua is poised to take her music to new heights following her recent signing with Sony Music México. She aspires to work with female powerhouses such as Kali Uchis, Doja Cat, and Ice Spice.
Reflecting on her journey, Mua expressed gratitude to her parents, who accompanied her when she signed her record deal. “I told them, ‘I hope with this signing that what I’m doing will secure our future as a family,'” she shared. “To be a person who can dedicate themselves to following their dreams, you’ve already won. This is just the beginning.”
