Clients of Fresh Cosmetic Clinic in Sydney have been advised to undergo testing for blood-borne diseases following serious allegations of infection control violations at the establishment.
Located on George Street in Sydney’s central business district, the clinic was raided by health authorities earlier this month. Both NSW Health and the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) have issued public health warnings in response to claims of misconduct at the clinic. Allegations include breaches of infection control protocols, the use of expired medications on clients, and the presentation of fraudulent registration certificates by staff members posing as qualified medical practitioners.
Investigators have revealed that unqualified personnel administered substances such as Botox, dermal fillers, and hyaluronic acid during cosmetic procedures.
As a result of these findings, Fresh Cosmetic Clinic was forced to close its doors on Wednesday, following an interim prohibition order from the HCCC that prohibits the clinic from providing any health services for eight weeks.
NSW Health is urging clients who received injections or underwent any invasive procedures, such as breast implants or facial line carving, to consult their general practitioner immediately for testing for blood-borne viruses.
Dr. Vicky Sheppeard, director of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that individuals infected with blood-borne diseases may remain asymptomatic for years, describing it as a “silent infection.”
“Blood-borne viruses can be transmitted between clients if injections or invasive procedures are performed without rigorous infection control measures,” Dr. Sheppeard noted. She also reassured the public that effective treatments are available for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.
NSW Health is collaborating with the HCCC to determine if further actions are necessary concerning the clinic’s operations. The investigation was initiated following multiple complaints regarding the clinic and its staff.
