Berry Global has introduced an innovative “easy-squeeze” ophthalmic 10ml bottle, specifically designed for use with Aptar Pharma’s Ophthalmic Squeeze Dispenser (OSD). This new product aims to improve the delivery of preservative-free eye treatments, such as those for conditions like conjunctivitis and glaucoma.
The new bottle has been qualified for use with the OSD system, which is known for its proven microbiological integrity and its ability to handle preservative-free prescription and over-the-counter eye care products. This development is part of a growing trend toward more sustainable and effective packaging for sensitive healthcare products.
Manufactured in low-density polyethylene (LDPE), the Berry Global bottle comes in two variants: a 10ml hybrid version and a soft version. The soft variant is specifically designed to reduce squeeze force, making it easier for users to dispense the contents. Both versions offer flexibility to accommodate different drug formulations, providing users with a precise and controlled dispensing experience.
Berry Global’s easy-squeeze bottle features a pocket-size design, optimizing user convenience while ensuring efficient flow control for accurate drop dispensing. The bottles are produced in ISO 7 cleanrooms at the company’s Offranville, France facility, where they undergo rigorous quality checks. These include automated testing for tightness, visual inspection, and validation for gamma and eto sterilization, ensuring they meet GMP pharmaceutical standards.
Xavier Le Grand, from Berry Global, highlighted the importance of reliable packaging solutions for the growing demand for preservative-free eye care products. “Our new bottle has been designed to fit seamlessly with the OSD, ensuring precise and controlled dispensing into the patient’s eye,” he said.
In addition to its ophthalmic packaging solutions, Berry Global has made strides in sustainability. Earlier this year, the company unveiled a new line of clarified polypropylene (PP) bottles for healthcare applications, claiming a 71% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional colored PET bottles. These ClariPPil bottles are also said to be more recyclable in regions with the appropriate recycling infrastructure.
The collaboration between Berry Global and Aptar Pharma represents a significant step forward in both product innovation and sustainability for the pharmaceutical packaging sector.
