Television personality Megyn Kelly has long been a divisive figure in the media, known for her sharp commentary and ability to stir controversy. One of the most talked-about moments in her career came in 2017 when she made a seemingly out-of-place remark to actress Jane Fonda during an interview on Megyn Kelly Today, Kelly’s then-new NBC talk show.
While the actress was a guest to promote the film Our Souls at Night, Kelly veered into a sensitive topic: Fonda’s cosmetic surgery history. The moment quickly became a point of contention, with critics slamming Kelly for what many perceived as an inappropriate and sexist line of questioning.
The Question That Stunned Jane Fonda
The exchange began innocuously enough. Kelly complimented Fonda’s graceful aging, telling the Oscar-winning actress, “You’ve been an example to everyone in how to age beautifully and with strength and unapologetically.” However, Kelly then pivoted to a more personal subject, asking Fonda about her plastic surgeries.
“You admit you’ve had work done, which I think is to your credit,” Kelly said, continuing, “but you look amazing. I read that you said you’re not proud to admit that you’ve had work done. Why not?”
The question clearly caught Fonda off guard. The actress, who has had breast implants, facelifts, and eye surgery, was visibly uncomfortable and responded pointedly: “We really want to talk about that now?”
Despite Fonda’s attempt to shift the conversation, Kelly pressed further, adding, “Well, one of the things people think about when they look at you is how amazing you look.” But Fonda refused to entertain the topic and responded with a pivot: “Good attitude, good posture, I take care of myself. But let me tell you why I love this movie that we did, ‘Our Souls at Night,’ rather than plastic surgery.”
