Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has once again overcome an injury scare, this time a swelling in his eye following the team’s recent matchup with the Toronto Raptors. Although the injury raised initial concerns, Davis has been cleared by doctors to play and is expected to suit up against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.
Davis, who has often found himself on the Lakers’ injury report in recent seasons, has enjoyed a strong start to the 2024-25 NBA campaign, remaining healthy for much of the year. After undergoing an examination by an ophthalmologist, the Lakers’ big man confirmed that the injury was not severe.
“The eye is fine,” Davis said on Tuesday. “I’m doing fine. Nothing happens next. I go about my day like I would any other day. There’s nothing that I need to do. The next step is getting more sleep and getting ready for tomorrow.”
Though Davis was initially offered protective goggles as a precaution, he declined to wear them. He emphasized that the eye specialist had no objections to him playing without the added gear, and he wasn’t keen on adopting the look, which would likely draw comparisons to Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who famously wore goggles throughout his career.
While Davis is healthy enough to play, the eye injury adds to his ongoing challenge of staying injury-free. However, his performance on the court has been stellar. In the early part of the season, Davis is averaging 31.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game, all while shooting a remarkable 57.7% from the field. His hot start places him among the league’s scoring elite, alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum, and has earned him early attention in the MVP race.
Despite the Lakers’ struggles in recent games, Davis has been the team’s standout performer, carrying the offensive load. His dominance in the paint, combined with his rebounding and shot-blocking, has solidified his place as the Lakers’ primary offensive weapon. LeBron James, who has ceded leadership duties to Davis, continues to support the 13-year veteran’s role as the No. 1 option for the team.
As the Lakers aim for success this season, the team’s fortunes will likely hinge on Davis’s ability to stay healthy and maintain his elite level of play, much like the days when Abdul-Jabbar anchored Los Angeles’ offense. However, while Davis may be making history alongside Lakers greats like Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem, he will not be following in Abdul-Jabbar’s footsteps when it comes to protective eyewear.
