Former X Factor judge and N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos is making her return to reality television on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! (17 Nov), marking the first time in years that many fans are seeing the star. However, what some viewers might not know is that her absence from the public eye can be partly attributed to a significant health setback.
In 2020, Tulisa was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition that causes temporary facial paralysis. This diagnosis led to noticeable changes in her appearance, sparking speculation about cosmetic surgery. However, the 36-year-old artist has since spoken out to clarify the situation and explain the difficult period she went through.
In an appearance on Loose Women in 2020, Tulisa addressed the rumors, admitting she had undergone cosmetic procedures, but also revealing the truth behind her decision. “I hadn’t had any surgery until, confession time, recently,” she said. “All the time before there was no surgery, it was only fillers.”
Tulisa explained that her decision to use fillers was linked to the effects of Bell’s palsy, which caused inflammation and swelling in her face. “I had a massive burst of inflammation and it went down but my whole face dropped,” she recalled. “I couldn’t move it. My face remained like that for seven months. I didn’t go out, I just hid in the house.”
Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, making it difficult to move the muscles in that area. Symptoms can include facial drooping, difficulty eating or drinking, and a dry or watering eye. For Tulisa, the impact was significant, leading to stress and a loss of confidence. She began using fillers to address the imbalance in her facial features caused by the condition.
Though the inflammation initially subsided, Tulisa’s symptoms flared up again in 2022, leading to renewed challenges. She described the experience as “scary” and said she sometimes had to take steroids to manage the swelling. “In some interviews, I looked fine, in others you’d ask, ‘What the hell is going on with her face?’”
After further complications, including the discovery of three chronically infected cysts in her cheek, Tulisa underwent surgery, which led to a reduction in swelling. “I came out of the operation instantly less swollen,” she shared, adding that while some inflammation remained, it was far less severe.
Tulisa’s openness about her health struggles comes as she continues her comeback, showing fans that her resilience and transparency are key to navigating the challenges life has thrown her way.
