Polokwane-based dermatologist Nthabiseng Chauke has shared a set of practical tips for maintaining smooth, healthy skin, emphasizing that both lifestyle habits and environmental factors play significant roles in skin texture.
In an interview, Chauke explained that skin’s appearance is influenced by external elements like pollution and skincare products, as well as internal factors such as overall health and diet. She also pointed out that natural aging processes, including wrinkles, are inevitable and should be embraced as a normal part of life.
To help readers maintain smooth skin, Chauke highlighted several home remedies that can enhance skin health:
Oatmeal Baths: Known for their moisture-retaining properties, oatmeal baths can soothe irritated skin and help treat certain conditions. These can either be prepared at home or purchased from stores, where a variety of oatmeal-based skincare products are available.
Honey: A natural exfoliator with bioactive properties, honey is effective in addressing various skin issues and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Humidifiers: Adding moisture to the air, humidifiers can prevent skin from drying out and are particularly helpful for conditions like psoriasis.
Coconut Oil: With its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, coconut oil serves as a powerful moisturizer. However, Chauke recommends limiting its use to the body, as it may clog pores on the face.
Essential Oils: When mixed with carrier oils, essential oils like lemon, rose, and jojoba can reduce wrinkles and treat multiple skin conditions.
Chauke also stressed the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to protect skin health. Key habits include staying hydrated, consuming antioxidant-rich foods, exercising regularly, ensuring adequate sleep, and using sunscreen to shield the skin from sun damage. She also advised quitting smoking, as tobacco use accelerates skin aging, increases wrinkle formation, and heightens the risk of skin disorders such as acne and psoriasis.
“Your lifestyle doesn’t just affect your overall health; it directly impacts the health of your skin,” Chauke concluded.
