Mumbai’s Surya Eye Hospital, a premier eye care institution, has launched Western India’s first Oculus Myopia Master, an advanced diagnostic system from Germany aimed at combating the growing prevalence of myopia in children.
The Myopia Master employs a contactless, painless approach to assess critical eye health parameters such as axial length, keratometry, and refraction. This innovative technology enables precise tracking and management of myopia progression, allowing for tailored treatment plans.
Developed in collaboration with OCULUS GmbH, Germany, and the Brien Holden Vision Institute in Australia, the tool integrates artificial intelligence (AI) for data analysis, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. The AI-based system empowers ophthalmologists to deliver personalized care, setting a new benchmark in myopia management.
Alarming Rise in Myopia
The launch comes as myopia emerges as a global public health challenge. Current data reveals that by 2030, 40% of Indian children are expected to require corrective eyewear due to myopia. Globally, one in three children is already affected, with prevalence rates surging from 12% in 1990 to 36% in 2023. Projections for 2050 indicate that nearly 69% of Asia’s population could face moderate myopia.
Expert Voices on Early Intervention
Highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue, Dr. Vinod Goyal, Senior Ophthalmologist and Director at Surya Eye Hospital, stated, “Myopia is a pressing global health issue that demands proactive intervention. With innovations like the Myopia Master, we aim to provide preventive care that ensures better outcomes for children, detecting and managing the condition early to safeguard their vision.”
Adding to this, Dr. Jay Goyal, LASIK and Retina Specialist at the hospital, emphasized the tool’s potential to reduce long-term risks associated with myopia. “Accurate diagnoses and customized care plans significantly lower children’s dependency on glasses and minimize the likelihood of complications like retinal detachment and glaucoma. Our focus is on offering timely and comprehensive care to address this rising epidemic,” he said.
Surya Eye Hospital’s introduction of the Myopia Master underscores its commitment to pioneering advanced eye care solutions, fostering healthier futures for children in India and beyond.
