On November 19, 2024, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, led by Second Secretary NISHIMURA Tokiko, officially handed over state-of-the-art ophthalmic surgical equipment to the Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission, Inc. (FOLPMI). This initiative, funded under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) through the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP), addresses the urgent need for affordable cataract treatment among underserved Filipinos.
Cataracts, the leading cause of blindness in the Philippines, affect over one million individuals, many of whom lack access to treatment due to high costs and limited resources. FOLPMI, a nonprofit providing free eye consultations and low-cost surgeries, has faced challenges with its outdated and unreliable equipment.
To bolster FOLPMI’s efforts, the Japanese government allocated $110,020 (approximately ₱6.2 million) for the purchase of advanced surgical tools, including a phacoemulsification machine and an LED operating microscope. These tools are expected to enhance the foundation’s ability to deliver efficient and effective eye care to marginalized communities.
The turnover ceremony, held in Parañaque City, was attended by Second Secretary Nishimura, Congressman Edwin Olivarez, and Mayor Eric Olivarez. Speaking at the event, Ms. Nishimura expressed hope that the equipment would “help patients see the world clearer and brighter,” underscoring Japan’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of Filipinos.
This project is part of Japan’s broader ODA efforts, which celebrate 70 years in 2024. Through the GGP, Japan has completed 564 grassroots projects in the Philippines, focusing on critical areas such as health care, education, and disaster resilience. These initiatives reflect Japan’s enduring friendship and strategic partnership with the Philippines.
