Elton John has provided an update on his ongoing vision challenges, revealing that he is no longer able to see out of his right eye following an eye infection earlier this summer. The legendary musician spoke candidly about the impact of his vision loss on his ability to create new music during an appearance on Good Morning America on Monday.
In his interview, John explained that the eye infection, which occurred while he was in the South of France, left him with permanent vision loss in his right eye. He also noted that his left eye is in poor condition as well. “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection,” John shared. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. And my left eye is not the greatest.”
Despite the setbacks, John remains hopeful that his vision will improve over time, though he admitted that the condition is making it difficult for him to record music. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK,” he said. “But I’m kind of stuck in the moment, because I can do something like this (the interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric to start.”
John emphasized the difficulty of not being able to see or read, revealing, “I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.” However, he expressed that he and his team are actively working on solutions to improve his vision.
During a past appearance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, the singer teased that he was working on a new album. Offering an update on the project, John admitted that his vision issues have delayed his work. “It’s been awhile since I’ve done anything and I just have to get off my backside,” he said.
This marks the latest chapter in John’s public acknowledgment of his eye injury, having first shared the details of his condition in September with Variety. At that time, he described the situation as “very distressing,” particularly because of his inability to engage in his usual morning routine of reading newspapers and staying up to date with current events and creative trends. “I’ve lost that for the time being,” he confessed.
As he continues to adjust to life with limited vision, John remains optimistic that he will overcome the challenges ahead.
