Influencer Niamh O’Connor has spoken out about the harmful impact social media can have on mental health, leading individuals to make “irrational” decisions about cosmetic surgery. With the growing popularity of aesthetic procedures in Ireland, O’Connor is raising awareness about the risks associated with such treatments.
The social media star, who has undergone several surgeries including ear pinning, breast augmentation, and buttock enhancements, revealed the struggles she has faced with her procedures. Some of these surgeries required multiple rounds to achieve the desired results.
In a candid interview, O’Connor shared the difficulties she experienced following her initial buttock surgery. “The first time I got my bum done, I got implants, and you could literally flip the implant inside me,” she explained. She attributed the issue to a mistake made by the surgeon, adding, “I had to go back and get things fixed.”
The influencer also recounted a troubling experience with filler injections, which led to cellulitis and a lengthy hospital stay. “I ended up in hospital for a few weeks over that as well,” O’Connor said.
Despite these challenges, O’Connor emphasized that even procedures performed locally can have unintended consequences. She attributed some of her decisions to the pressures she faced from social media. “When I started social media, I honestly think that I probably wasn’t in the best mental state to be making the decisions that I was,” she admitted. “I was probably making irrational decisions based on my own mental state.”
The constant scrutiny of her appearance online left O’Connor vulnerable to judgment, leading to feelings of insecurity. “People would comment on my body all the time, and I couldn’t cope with it,” she reflected. “I think it has an impact on your mental health, which then has a knock-on effect on making decisions like plastic surgery.”
O’Connor also highlighted the ongoing cycle of dissatisfaction that often follows cosmetic surgery. “What happens is you just gain a new insecurity every time you fix one,” she said. Despite the challenges, she considers her experience, including the hospital visit, a “wake-up call” that has helped her reassess her relationship with beauty standards.
As cosmetic procedures become more mainstream, O’Connor’s story serves as a cautionary tale of how the pressures of social media can influence vulnerable individuals into making life-changing decisions.
