As people age, many experience a gradual decline in their physical health, and one of the most common afflictions is deteriorating eyesight. Among the leading causes of vision loss in older adults is macular degeneration, a condition that results in the thinning of the macula and the buildup of protein deposits, which causes significant damage to the retina. This leads to blurred vision, dark spots, and, in severe cases, total loss of sight.
Currently, there is no cure for macular degeneration, but recent developments in the field of medical technology offer a glimmer of hope. A study presented at the 24th Euretina Congress has revealed promising results from an ongoing clinical trial that could revolutionize the treatment of age-related vision loss.
Science Corporation, a company specializing in brain-computer interfaces, has been working on innovative technologies to improve the quality of life for people with severe health conditions. The company’s breakthrough product, the PRIMA device, has been implanted in the retinas of several patients suffering from macular degeneration. The device works in conjunction with a pair of specialized glasses and a wireless processing unit, effectively helping patients regain vision.
Max Hodak, CEO of Science Corporation, expressed immense optimism about the device’s potential, stating, “To my knowledge, this is the first time that restoration of the ability to fluently read has ever been definitively shown in blind patients. This represents an enormous turning point for the field, and we’re incredibly excited to bring this important technology to market over the next few years.”
The clinical trial, which began over a year ago, involved 38 patients who received the PRIMA device. After 12 months, the results were astonishing: participants showed a mean improvement of 4.6 lines on a standard vision chart, with one patient achieving an impressive 11.8-line improvement. Notably, the study also revealed that the patients’ natural vision remained stable, with no worsening observed without the aid of the glasses.
With the trial set to continue until February 2026 and potentially beyond, the early results are incredibly encouraging. While it’s too soon to declare a permanent cure, the success of this trial brings new hope to individuals suffering from macular degeneration and other vision disorders. The innovative PRIMA device could pave the way for future treatments that restore sight and significantly improve the lives of millions.
