Danny Jones, the McFly star, has candidly shared his difficult health journey, from recovering from a serious knee injury to managing years of crippling anxiety.
In 2021, Jones suffered a painful injury when he tore his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), a critical ligament in the knee that prevents the shin bone from sliding forward on the thigh bone. To address the injury, he underwent reconstructive surgery, which included repairs to both his ACL and meniscus. Despite the agony, the surgery was necessary for his recovery, and Jones kept his fans informed throughout the process, even sharing graphic photos of his stitches and scars.
“All went well, and I’m at home recovering. Thanks for all the messages,” he posted on social media after the surgery. Following months of rehabilitation, Jones celebrated a key milestone in his recovery. He expressed his triumph in an emotional post: “Today was a day I’ve been waiting for ever since my #ACL surgery. I finally made it through some circuit training, felt my lungs working, and sweat dripping. I cannot tell you how good it feels.”
The physical recovery was an accomplishment, but it was his battle with mental health that Jones has been particularly open about. The singer and television personality has dealt with severe panic attacks for years, beginning when he was just 18 years old, coinciding with his parents’ divorce and McFly’s rising fame.
In a 2021 interview, Jones shared the terrifying nature of his panic attacks. “I experienced claustrophobia, cold sweats, a tightening around my chest, and feared I was having a heart attack. It was so scary, at times I felt like I was dying. You can’t believe your body can do that to you.”
These attacks were accompanied by uncontrollable dark thoughts, which deeply affected his work, health, and sleep. However, after years of struggle, Jones was determined to confront and overcome his anxiety. He credits his recovery to several factors: reading self-help books, practicing breathing techniques, attending therapy, and focusing on his physical health through diet and exercise.
“I haven’t had an attack since 2013, which I’m very thankful for,” Jones revealed. “Admitting to having anxiety was the first big step. Bit by bit, I put myself back together.”
Danny Jones’ candidness about his struggles has resonated with many, shedding light on the difficult journey toward recovery and mental well-being. His story is a powerful reminder of the strength it takes to face personal challenges, both physical and mental.
