NFL legend Randy Moss has raised concern after revealing he is “battling something internal” and requesting prayers for his recovery. While Moss, 47, has not disclosed the specific health issue, doctors have speculated he may be suffering from a liver condition based on recent footage showing yellowing of his eyes.
In a recent Instagram post, Moss opened up about his health battle, assuring fans that he has a strong medical team and support system. “I’m battling something man, something internal, but your boy gonna get through it,” he said. “I have a great team of doctors and a great family around me now.” Moss added that he plans to continue working during his illness, though he would wear sunglasses when his eyes appeared yellow.
The yellowing of Moss’s eyes, a condition known as jaundice, has led doctors to believe he may be dealing with liver damage or a related disorder. Dr. James Dello Russo, an optometrist based in New Jersey, confirmed that the yellowing of Moss’s eyes indicates jaundice, a sign that the liver is not effectively breaking down bilirubin, a substance produced when red blood cells are broken down.
While jaundice itself is not a disease, it often points to underlying liver issues, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver cancer. Dr. Dello Russo speculated that Moss’s condition could stem from viral infections like Hepatitis B or C, liver damage from alcohol consumption (though there is no evidence to suggest alcohol is involved), or even autoimmune conditions that attack the liver.
The former wide receiver has yet to confirm the exact nature of his health struggles, but in a video aired before ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Moss reassured his fans, saying, “I just wanted to share something with you all… me and my family, we are battling something internally. I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show; I wanted to be here with you guys.”
Jaundice is often caused by the liver’s inability to process bilirubin, leading to its accumulation in the blood. It can be linked to several liver-related conditions, including cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver tissue. Liver cirrhosis is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, resulting in 26,000 deaths annually. However, with proper medical treatment, cirrhosis can often be reversed, although more severe conditions like liver cancer may offer less optimistic recovery prospects. In some cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.
Dr. Dello Russo emphasized that if Moss is suffering from hepatitis, there are effective treatments available. “If it is hepatitis, we do have a cure for that—so he can get better and pretty quickly, within a month,” he said. Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that can damage the liver and are typically transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids.
While the exact cause of Moss’s jaundice remains unclear, Dr. Dello Russo also noted the possibility of other conditions, including gallstones, which can block bile ducts and lead to jaundice. Gallstones affect over a million Americans annually, with risk factors including diet, family history, and age.
Another potential cause of jaundice is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition often linked to obesity and poor diet. NAFLD affects about 100 million Americans each year and is becoming increasingly common as lifestyle-related health issues rise.
Moss’s health disclosure has left many fans concerned, especially after his noticeable eye discoloration during recent broadcasts. While there has been no official confirmation about the nature of his illness, doctors remain optimistic that with the right treatment, his condition can be managed. As of now, Moss continues to work while undergoing medical care and has expressed his gratitude for the support of his family and medical team.
