Megyn Kelly, once a prominent figure in mainstream media, appears to have burned bridges with some of Hollywood’s biggest names over her controversial comments on plastic surgery. While the former Fox News host has made a name for herself through polarizing statements, her blunt questions about cosmetic enhancements have left lasting tensions, particularly with celebrities she has interviewed.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in 2017, during Kelly’s early days on NBC’s Megyn Kelly Today. In an interview with legendary actors Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, Kelly began by complimenting Fonda’s age-defying beauty. “You’ve been an example to everyone in how to age beautifully and with strength and unapologetically,” Kelly remarked. However, her questions quickly took a turn when she asked Fonda about her admitted plastic surgery. “You admit you’ve had work done, which I think is to your credit. But you look amazing… I read you said you felt not proud to admit you had work done. Why not?” Kelly probed.
Fonda, clearly uncomfortable, dismissed the question and redirected the conversation back to her new film, Our Souls At Night. While Fonda had previously acknowledged undergoing surgery, Kelly’s line of questioning was seen as inappropriate by many, especially with Redford sitting beside her. Fonda later criticized Kelly’s interviewing skills, telling Variety, “It was so inappropriate. It just shows she’s not that good an interviewer.” She added that she would consider another interview with Kelly, but only if the host demonstrated better journalism etiquette.
Kelly’s remarks were not isolated. In a more recent episode of her podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly made headlines for her harsh commentary on the appearance of actress Erin Moriarty, best known for her role in The Boys. In a January 2024 episode, Kelly criticized Moriarty’s transformation, alleging she had undergone significant cosmetic surgery. “She’s got the Kim Kardashian lips, she made her nose so skinny it looks like a pencil now, she’s got what appear to me to be cheek implants,” Kelly said, expressing concern about the growing trend of young women altering their appearances.
Moriarty, visibly hurt by the comments, responded on Instagram, where she shared that Kelly’s claims were based on an old, heavily contoured photo. “Shame on you Megyn Kelly,” Moriarty wrote, calling the insinuations both false and damaging. She also clarified that the “before” photo Kelly referenced was taken when she was underage, adding, “Implying that my photo is reflective of women being in a worse place is as false as my conviction of saying that if you resigned, you would be leaving women in a better place.” Moriarty later deleted the post, though she has since resumed her Instagram activity.
Kelly’s repeated focus on celebrities’ cosmetic surgeries, coupled with her own rumored procedures, has sparked a backlash, with many accusing her of hypocrisy. As her media career continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether Kelly will reconcile with those she has offended or further alienate the very celebrities she once sought to interview.
