Megan Barton-Hanson, the former Love Island star, has revealed how undergoing plastic surgery helped her overcome bullying in her youth and ultimately transform into the “Alan Sugar of strip clubs.” In an open conversation on Paul Carrick Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast, the 30-year-old shared the details behind her decision to pursue cosmetic procedures and her journey to financial independence.
At the age of 19, Barton-Hanson underwent a double surgery, which included a nose job and breast augmentation. Reflecting on her decision, the reality star explained that the bullying she endured in school over her physical appearance played a significant role in her choice to alter her looks. She was teased for her nose and “sticky-out” ears, which contributed to her lack of self-confidence at the time.
Barton-Hanson admitted to dating expert Paul Carrick Brunson that, although she initially had no issues with her natural body, financial motivation played a large part in her decision to have breast surgery. “I’ll be brutally honest – money,” she confessed. She described how seeing a girl on social media making money as a glamour model inspired her to pursue a similar path.
“I wanted to be a glamour model, a Page 3 girl,” she recalled. “I was working in London and it was minimum wage. I was barely affording my train ticket from Essex to London. I thought, ‘This can’t be what life is.'”
Following the surgery, Barton-Hanson began posting revealing photos on Instagram, gaining a significant following before her rise to fame on Love Island in 2018. Her social media success helped her transition into a more lucrative career, leading her to work at a strip club as she sought financial stability.
“I was earning really bad money at the law firm, and it wasn’t worth the hours I was putting in,” she explained. “I had no money to spend at the weekend. I walked past the strip club, and the girls outside looked so happy, they were glamorous as [expletive].”
With little hesitation, Barton-Hanson applied for a job at the strip club. She revealed that she had never previously been inside one but felt drawn to the lifestyle, where she could be her own boss and earn significantly more money. “I was being sexualized at the law firm, so I thought, ‘If you’re going to sexualize me, I might as well make money from it,'” she said.
Barton-Hanson soon thrived in her new role. “For the first year, I thought I’d made it. I thought I was Alan Sugar,” she laughed. “It was freeing. Some of the best memories of my life came from working in that club. It gave me a sisterhood I’d never experienced.”
The Essex native also discussed her romantic life, including her past relationship with Love Island co-star Wes Nelson. Despite their breakup, Barton-Hanson shared that they remain civil and friendly. She also spoke about her experiences dating women and men, emphasizing that she values connection over gender.
Throughout her career, Barton-Hanson has used her platform to advocate for sex positivity, stemming from her experiences with slut-shaming during her school years. “At school, I was badly slut-shamed, and I carried a sense of shame around with me,” she reflected. “I think that’s why I’m so outspoken now.”
Now a vocal advocate for female empowerment and sexual freedom, Barton-Hanson continues to speak openly about her past and the challenges she has faced. As she explained, she feels passionate about using her platform to encourage others to embrace their sexuality and challenge societal norms. “It was never my intention to come out of Love Island and speak so openly about sex and female pleasure,” she stated, “but now I’ve really come into my own.”
Megan Barton-Hanson’s story underscores the complexities of fame, body image, and self-empowerment, proving that her transformation is about much more than just physical appearance.
