Michael Ball, the 62-year-old musical theatre icon, recently shared a humorous yet painful anecdote about his brief foray into Botox. Speaking on the UK television show Loose Women, the West End star revealed that a famous singer encouraged him to undergo the cosmetic procedure in his late forties, advising him to “do it now before you need it.”
Though he declined to name the celebrity, Ball recalled the advice he received over 15 years ago. “She was looking great and said, ‘Botox, love, do it now before you need it!’” he said. “I thought that ship may have sailed.”
Despite his initial reservations, Ball decided to follow the singer’s suggestion and went ahead with the Botox injection. However, the experience proved to be far from pleasant. “First of all, it hurts like you can’t believe,” he admitted. “I’m not that brave, and I came out looking like a Klingon – one eye went up, the other came down.”
The actor, known for his performances in Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, also shared that his partner, Cathy McGowan, was horrified by his decision. “I went home, and Cathy said, ‘What the hell have you done? You can’t go out!’ I stayed home for six months to avoid being seen.”
Ball humorously concluded that the experience was a cautionary tale, adding, “There’s one clip of me on Wogan’s Now and Then at the tail end of the Botox effect. Never, ever, ever again… let that be a lesson!”
