As the year comes to a close, many individuals are reviewing their healthcare coverage for the upcoming year, making important decisions about insurance plans, or adjusting their coverage due to changes in their career or family circumstances. One option that can add significant value to a healthcare plan is a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) offered through an employer. FSAs allow employees to set aside funds for qualifying healthcare services and dependent care expenses.
However, FSAs come with an important stipulation: unused funds do not roll over into the next year. As such, it is crucial to use the 2024 funds before December 31 to ensure they do not expire.
At Carle Health, FSAs can be used for a variety of healthcare expenses, including hearing aids, vision services, medical devices, and more. For example, at the Optical Shop in Champaign, FSA funds can be used to purchase prescription glasses, contact lenses, sunglasses, frames, lenses, and other related medical items. Additionally, items such as Bruder heat masks, which are used to treat dry eyes, are eligible for FSA spending.
“Having two pairs of glasses is always beneficial for children, as it provides a backup in case one breaks,” said Betsy Wilson, Optician at Carle Optical. “For children who wear contacts, it’s essential to ensure their glasses prescription is updated at the same time as their contact lenses.”
In addition to providing backup, multiple pairs of glasses can also serve practical and aesthetic purposes. “Adults can also benefit from having several pairs of glasses, such as a backup, a pair for computer use, or prescription sunglasses,” Wilson explained. “Glasses are more than just a functional item; they are an extension of your personal style, and multiple pairs allow you to accessorize and enhance your look.”
Carle Optical also offers rebates on contact lenses when an annual supply is purchased in full.
When planning for 2025, it’s essential to consider your healthcare needs and budget for the upcoming year. If you plan to use an FSA, Flex Health Savings Account, or similar coverage, it’s a good idea to think ahead about your requirements for contact lenses, glasses, prescriptions, and medical equipment. Additionally, understanding what will be covered under your plan and what might incur out-of-pocket costs is vital.
“It’s crucial to update both your contact lens and glasses prescriptions simultaneously,” Wilson advised. “You never know when an eye infection may occur, or when you might run out of contacts. This is particularly important for those with high prescriptions.”
For added convenience, Carle Optical offers a virtual try-on tool to help customers explore different styles and colors of glasses remotely. This tool allows users to upload an image of their face or use their phone or computer camera to virtually “try on” different frames.
“Our experienced and certified Opticians are here to guide you through the process, ensuring you achieve the best vision and find the perfect eyewear to express your style,” Wilson said.
To stay prepared for your healthcare needs in 2025, it’s crucial to plan ahead—especially when it comes to vision care.
