In a recent Twitter exchange, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema mocked Helen Zille’s use of Botox, reviving an ongoing rivalry between the two South African political figures. Malema’s comment came after Zille retweeted an old video clip of him from 2019, drawing attention to a promise he made regarding building schools.
The video, originally posted by outspoken musician The Kiffness, featured Malema vowing to build a school in Alexandria within five years, or else the public should not vote for his party. The clip resurfaced after The Kiffness humorously suggested that Malema had until Monday to fulfill his promise. Zille, the former leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), responded to the tweet by calling it the “tweet of the year.”
Malema, not one to let a challenge slide, quickly responded to Zille’s comment with a sarcastic jab: “It is aging nicely like it has got Botox.” This was not the first time the EFF leader has used Zille’s appearance as the subject of mockery. In 2023, he ridiculed her over her reaction to his controversial “Kill The Boer” reference during the EFF’s 10-year anniversary celebrations, taking aim at her looks with an even harsher insult. “How do wrinkles and buttocks go together?” Malema quipped, calling Zille’s appearance “the face of a devil” and mocking her use of Botox.
The Botox comments are not entirely new territory for Zille. In 2009, she openly acknowledged having Botox treatments, explaining that she initially thought the procedure was superficial but decided to try it after noticing her frown lines. In a 2005 interview, she said the results had been positive.
While Malema continues to draw attention to Zille’s cosmetic choices, the EFF leader himself has also been the subject of speculation about his own appearance. In recent years, Malema has undergone a noticeable physical transformation, leading some to speculate about potential weight loss surgery.
The exchange between Malema and Zille, both well-known for their often fiery public personas, is the latest chapter in their longstanding political rivalry, which has frequently spilled over into personal barbs.
