Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital will host the second edition of its annual summit on January 4, focusing on the rising concerns of myopia and digital eye strain, which are becoming increasingly prevalent due to prolonged screen time.
Ashvin Agarwal, Chief Clinical Officer of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about myopia, which is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. He highlighted that India currently has 1.5 million people affected by the condition. “Our goal is to educate the public on the basics of myopia and its impact on eye health,” Agarwal said.
S. Soundari, Regional Head of Clinical Services, shared alarming statistics about the growing prevalence of myopia in urban India, noting an increase from 4.44% in 1999 to 21.15% in 2019. She warned that this figure is projected to rise to 48.14% by 2050.
Kaladevi Satish, Zonal Head of Clinical Services, pointed out several signs that parents should watch for in children, including frequent eye rubbing, headaches, blurred vision when viewing distant objects, and excessive blinking. She advised that such symptoms could indicate refractive errors, necessitating a professional eye check-up.
Ramya Sampath, Regional Head of Clinical Services, announced that the summit would also feature discussions on laser vision correction procedures and their potential benefits for patients. Those interested in attending can register to participate in the event, which will be held live in Chennai and Mumbai, with interactive online sessions available.
