On December 23, Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung Tae raised concerns about First Lady Kim Keon Hee’s visit to a plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam on the same day martial law was declared, suggesting a possible link between the visit and the state of emergency.
Speaking at a press conference at the National Assembly’s Communication Hall, Jang detailed the timeline of the visit, stating that Kim entered the clinic at 6:25 PM on December 3 and remained there for three hours, leaving at 9:30 PM—just one hour before the martial law declaration was made. Surveillance footage from the clinic reportedly showed a black vehicle, believed to be carrying the First Lady, entering the premises.
Jang also pointed to the clinic’s director, Dr. Park Dong Man, who has served as a medical advisor to President Yoon Suk Yeol since July 2022. Dr. Park was also part of the First Couple’s entourage during their visit to the Louis Vuitton Foundation Museum in Paris for the 2022 Busan Expo promotion.
Questioning the necessity of Kim’s in-person visit, Jang asked, “Why didn’t Kim Keon Hee have Dr. Park come to the presidential office or residence for treatment that day?” He further speculated whether Kim, a civilian, could have had prior knowledge of the martial law declaration, citing her departure from the clinic just before the announcement.
Jang also expressed concerns about the possibility of illegal drug use during Kim’s three-hour visit. “What did Kim Keon Hee do during those three hours?” he asked, noting that such an extended stay was uncommon for routine treatments. He cited industry professionals who suggest that a visit of this duration could raise suspicions of illicit drug administration, including propofol, which is sometimes used in medical procedures.
The allegations come amid growing political scrutiny surrounding the First Lady’s activities, adding further controversy to the ongoing debate over the government’s handling of the martial law declaration.
