Priyanka Chopra’s successful two-decade career in filmmaking almost came to an abrupt halt due to a botched nose surgery, according to filmmaker Anil Sharma. The director, who helmed Chopra’s Bollywood debut The Hero, recently shared details about the incident that almost ended the actress’s career before it began.
Speaking in an interview, Sharma recounted how Chopra underwent a “medical operation that went bad” to alter her appearance, which reportedly aimed to make her resemble actress Julia Roberts. However, Sharma was quick to clarify that it was not Chopra’s fault, emphasizing that the procedure went wrong due to unforeseen complications.
Following the surgery, Chopra reportedly faced several professional setbacks, with many of her movie contracts being canceled. In a moment of despair, she even went to visit Sharma to return the advance she had received for The Hero, which was ₹5 lakh. Sharma recalled that she told him she was heading back to Bareilly after being dismissed from multiple projects. She had planned to return the signing money, but Sharma urged her to keep it, offering her a dose of encouragement.
In an emotional revelation, Chopra shared the details of her experience with the director. “They said they were holding off on returning my money,” she told him. Despite the setbacks, Sharma was adamant that Chopra should not give up on her dreams. He stopped her from returning home, recalling how her parents had planned for her to resume her studies and practice, while her father had rejoined his army duties in Bareilly.
Sharma’s decision to support Chopra marked a pivotal moment in her career. The actress stayed in the industry and went on to star in her first Hindi film The Hero, alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. That same year, Chopra found commercial success with Andaz and soon received critical acclaim for roles in films like Aitraaz, Barfi!, and Mary Kom.
Chopra’s career further expanded internationally when she moved to the United States, landing a lead role in the popular TV series Quantico. She continued to rise in Hollywood with major projects, including Citadel and The Matrix Resurrections, solidifying her place as one of the most successful and versatile actors of her generation.
