Brooke Shields has become an outspoken advocate for women’s health, sharing a deeply personal experience in her new memoir. The actress, best known for her role in Suddenly Susan, reveals that she underwent labia reduction surgery in her 40s after years of dealing with discomfort, chafing, and bleeding. However, the surgery took an unexpected turn when she learned that her doctor had also performed a vaginal rejuvenation procedure without her consent.
In her memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, the 59-year-old actress admits the experience left her feeling violated. “I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information,” she writes. “But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues.”
Shields, who is now speaking publicly about the procedure, recounts her post-operative check-up, where her doctor casually mentioned the addition of a “bonus” vaginal rejuvenation procedure, which she had never consented to. “He informed me that he threw in a little bonus,” Shields said in a January 8 interview “It felt like such an invasion—such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind.” She emphasized that nothing about her condition had suggested a need for such a procedure. “Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there.”
For years, Shields kept her experience private, only confiding in her husband, Chris Henchy. But now, she is opening up in an effort to raise awareness about women’s autonomy over their bodies and health decisions. “Shame is no longer an option,” she states in her memoir.
Shields’ candidness about her body and aging is nothing new. Throughout her career, she has been outspoken about societal beauty standards. Reflecting on the pressure to age “gracefully,” she told, “Aging is not a graceful process.” She added that the expectation for women to look youthful at all costs was frustrating, saying, “Excuse me, but f–k you.” According to Shields, true grace comes from accepting oneself, even as time takes its toll. “If you don’t like what’s happening to your stomach, do sit-ups,” she advised. “Being graceful as you age is just admitting the truth and then seeing what you’re comfortable doing about it.”
Shields’ decision to share her story reflects a growing trend of celebrities discussing cosmetic surgery and body image candidly. Many other public figures, including Ariana Grande, Kailyn Lowry, and Selena Gomez, have recently opened up about their own procedures, from Botox to breast reductions. These disclosures aim to dismantle the stigma surrounding cosmetic enhancements and encourage a more honest dialogue about body image.
In an age where plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are increasingly normalized, these public figures, including Shields, are leading the charge for greater transparency and bodily autonomy. By sharing their personal stories, they hope to spark conversations that empower women to make informed, consensual choices about their health and appearance.
Shields’ revelation comes as part of a larger cultural shift where celebrities are prioritizing authenticity and self-acceptance, rejecting societal pressures to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty. Through her memoir and interviews, Shields hopes her experience will inspire other women to speak up and reclaim control over their bodies.
