Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has been called to explain a two-week absence in July 2023, during which she underwent rhinoplasty, a procedure she insists was medically necessary, not cosmetic. Boluarte, 62, appeared before prosecutors for a four-hour session on Monday, but left without addressing reporters’ questions.
During her absence, which was not preceded by the appointment of a caretaker president, Boluarte stands accused of neglecting her duties. Critics argue that she violated constitutional rules by failing to delegate her powers to Congress. Boluarte’s team, however, maintains that she continued fulfilling her responsibilities remotely while recovering from surgery for breathing issues at a Lima clinic.
This latest controversy is only one in a series of scandals surrounding the president. Boluarte is also under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes, including Rolex watches and jewelry, and for her role in the deaths of over 50 protesters during violent demonstrations in 2022. These investigations follow a turbulent political history, as Boluarte took office in December 2022 after the impeachment and imprisonment of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, who attempted to dissolve Congress. Boluarte, formerly his vice president, has denied all allegations.
The president faces significant political challenges, including a staggering 95% disapproval rating and the lack of a political party in Congress. Her term, which ends in July 2026, takes place amid ongoing political instability in Peru, where six presidents have held office over the past eight years.
