Gogo Manzini, the celebrated sangoma and transgender activist, is recovering after undergoing a series of cosmetic surgeries to enhance her appearance. In early January, she traveled to Turkey for a comprehensive set of procedures, including a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), tummy tuck, liposuction, rhinoplasty, fox eyes, and breast augmentation.
Manzini, whose birth name is Tyra Sindane, has been on a skin bleaching journey since 2023. In an interview, she shared her motivations for pursuing physical transformation. “I want to look like a porcelain doll. I want to perfect what needs perfection and adjust my body to my liking,” she explained. “No one can ever say they are 100% happy with their looks. Why not work on what God gave you? I’ve always wanted a BBL, so my expensive designer clothes can sit well on me.”
Although she anticipated the process to be painful, Manzini expressed that the recovery from the procedures, particularly the BBL, has been manageable. “The procedure was not painful, especially the BBL — which I expected to be a nightmare,” she said. “I have been highly medicated, struggling to eat solids and speak due to the surgery on my face, but it will be worth it in the end.”
The 30-year-old sangoma is expected to fully recover in six weeks and is excited to reveal her “dream face and body.” She emphasized the importance of research and preparation before committing to the surgeries. “I did the necessary research — from choosing the right doctors and clinic to getting health checks and preparing for the big day. I also learned about the recovery process, risks, and medications. I’m very prepared because I know it will be worth it in the end to get my dream body.”
Manzini has struggled with stubborn belly fat in the past, having tried various products without success, and gym sessions were not an ideal option for her. “There are parts of my body that I don’t like, and I’ve always had the dream of reconstructing them. The perfect time is now,” she said. Her decision to undergo all of the surgeries in one trip to Turkey is aimed at recovering in one go.
With prior experience in lip and face fillers, Manzini is also an advocate for normalizing plastic surgery among transgender people and the LGBTQI community. “Men go for tummy tucks, facelifts, and the works, but they don’t talk about it often,” she noted. “All risks and side effects were carefully considered, but as the saying goes, life is about taking risks. I’m doing this for my self-esteem and confidence, which I’ve always had.”
Manzini is committed to challenging stigmas surrounding cosmetic surgery, particularly in the LGBTQI community, emphasizing that there is no shame in pursuing physical perfection, especially for those who can afford it. “Who says sangomas should not look good?” she remarked.
As she continues her recovery, Manzini remains a powerful advocate for self-expression and confidence, embracing her transformation as a symbol of empowerment.
