A growing number of men are seeking plastic surgery treatments, signaling a shift in how they approach personal aesthetics. Recent data from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reveals that 92% of surgeons are now treating male patients, underscoring a notable rise in male interest in cosmetic enhancements.
Male Aesthetic Trends on the Rise
While women have historically dominated the aesthetic market, men are increasingly closing the gap. Procedures like blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (nose job), and facelifts remain among the most popular for male patients. However, there is also a rising demand for more subtle enhancements such as buccal fat removal and otoplasty (ear surgery), indicating a shift toward discreet improvements.
Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Lee Ann Klausner of New York attributes this growth to the broader self-care movement. “Men want to look as good as they feel,” Klausner explains, as more men embrace long-term well-being practices. Additionally, treatments to create a more sculpted jawline are gaining traction, with neck procedures like submental liposuction becoming increasingly common.
Hair Restoration Remains a Priority
Hair loss remains a major concern for many men, driven by societal expectations around masculinity and youthfulness. Dr. Kimberly Lee, a Beverly Hills-based facial plastic surgeon, notes that the pressure to maintain a full head of hair has never been more pronounced. However, as noninvasive hair restoration treatments improve, men are now acting proactively.
Dr. Klausner highlights TED (Transdermal Epidermal Delivery), an ultrasound-based technique that enhances the absorption of hair growth serums. “This no-pain, no-numbing procedure delivers excellent results for men still retaining some hair,” she says. Dr. Jeffrey Wise of New Jersey agrees, noting the increasing popularity of hair loss treatments as more options become available.
The Rise of Injectables for Men
The trend of men seeking injectables, including Botox and dermal fillers, has surged in recent years. The rise of social media and the prevalence of video conferencing, such as Zoom meetings, have contributed to this uptick. Dr. Lee notes that these procedures are no longer exclusively for women. “With more men embracing Botox and fillers, we are seeing a shift in cultural perceptions about cosmetic enhancements.”
Dr. Wise attributes this surge to a desire to remain competitive, particularly in the workplace. “As society places an emphasis on youthful appearances, many men are opting for rejuvenating procedures like hair transplants, along with minimally invasive treatments like injectables and lasers.”
A Subtle Approach to Enhancement
Across the board, plastic surgeons agree that most male patients aren’t seeking drastic changes. Rather, they are looking for subtle tweaks that enhance their natural features. “These treatments offer men a convenient and discreet option for maintaining a youthful, refreshed look,” says Dr. Lee, emphasizing the trend toward noninvasive, preventive measures for aging.
As the demand for male plastic surgery grows, it’s clear that the pursuit of aesthetic enhancement is no longer confined to women, but is becoming a mainstream trend for men seeking to improve their appearance in a way that feels authentic to them.
