At the 2025 Oscars, Andrew Garfield stepped in to assist acting legend Goldie Hawn after she revealed difficulties with her vision. The 79-year-old Death Becomes Her star, presenting two awards with Garfield early in the ceremony, struggled to read the autocue due to cataracts.
While delivering her pre-written lines, Hawn paused mid-sentence, admitting she couldn’t see the text on the screen. In response, Garfield quickly offered his help, guiding her through the rest of the segment.
Cataracts, a common condition associated with aging, cause blurry vision and are a frequent concern for many seniors.
The moment quickly garnered praise from viewers, with many calling it a “beautiful” exchange. Garfield’s assistance was particularly touching given his heartfelt words to Hawn earlier in the ceremony. He thanked her for bringing joy to his late mother, who passed away in 2019.
“Goldie, can I tell you something really quickly?” Garfield began. “There is a person who gave my mother the most joy and comfort during her life—and tonight, I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn.”
This interaction added an emotional layer to the event, amid fierce competition at the 2025 Oscars. With films like Anora and The Brutalist leading the race, the ceremony marks a tense battle for top honors this year.
Among the frontrunners for the acting awards are Demi Moore, Timothée Chalamet, Kieran Culkin, and Zoe Saldaña.
