Dimitrios Karamichos, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), has been awarded the 2025 Achievements in Eye and Vision Advocacy Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to advancing advocacy efforts in eye and vision research.
Karamichos will be formally recognized during ARVO’s annual meeting in May. As executive director and endowed chair of the North Texas Eye Research Institute at UNTHSC, he has been a leader in vision science, focusing his research on developing innovative treatments for corneal trauma, dystrophies, and other vision-related diseases. His work extends beyond the lab, as Karamichos has consistently advocated for increased awareness and funding to support eye health initiatives.
A passionate advocate, Karamichos has participated in numerous congressional briefings, led educational campaigns, and organized community initiatives to raise awareness about eye health. His efforts also include public outreach through events aimed at promoting vision care. Moreover, Karamichos has been a mentor to many emerging researchers in the field, providing professional development and creating an inclusive environment for early-career scientists.
In addition to his recognition by ARVO, Karamichos was named one of the “Most Visionary Leaders to Watch” in 2024 by Healthcare Everything magazine. His influence in the field of eye health has expanded with the launch of Whole Eye Health, an initiative he introduced in 2023. The initiative highlights the crucial link between eye health and overall well-being, with the first symposium bringing together researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates to explore integrated approaches to vision care.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized by ARVO for my work in eye and vision research advocacy,” Karamichos said. “Advocacy is essential for the continued progress of vision science, and I’m grateful to UNTHSC for their ongoing support, which has made accomplishments like this possible.”
Looking to the future, Karamichos remains dedicated to advancing research and education in vision health. His plans include continued exploration of eye diseases, technological innovations, and policy changes that will benefit both eye care professionals and the general public. He will also continue his involvement with organizations that advocate for increased funding and better access to eye care, through donations, volunteerism, and strategic collaborations.
Karamichos’ work exemplifies his personal commitment to improving public health outcomes and advancing scientific discovery in vision research, further highlighting UNTHSC’s dedication to the field.
