Drew Barrymore is sharing her personal experience with plastic surgery to raise awareness about breast health, particularly breast cancer screenings. In a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress discussed the breast reduction procedure she underwent at the age of 17 and its implications for health monitoring.
During her conversation with OBGYN Dr. Kameelah Phillips, Barrymore reflected on her experience with breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, and its potential impact on health practices. The actress, known for her role in 50 First Dates, posed important questions about how cosmetic alterations, such as breast reductions or implants, might affect women’s health journeys.
“What if someone’s had a reduction like me? What if someone has had implants or enhancements? How does any alteration of our bodies also play into that process?” she asked, highlighting concerns many women may have about how these procedures intersect with breast cancer screenings.
Dr. Phillips emphasized that while individuals who have undergone cosmetic breast surgeries should continue to receive regular mammograms, they also need additional imaging, such as ultrasounds, for a more comprehensive health checkup. Barrymore confirmed that she follows this approach, regularly getting both mammograms and ultrasounds to monitor her health.
“I always get a mammogram and an ultrasound, always both,” Barrymore shared. “I also know how fortunate and privileged that is.”
Despite her past procedure, Barrymore, now 50, has no intention of pursuing any further cosmetic surgeries. In a 2023 interview, the actress humorously commented on aging, joking that she looks forward to “seeing what I look like as a leather bag in the future.” She further emphasized her stance on cosmetic surgery, saying, “I haven’t done anything, and I’m going to maintain that as long as possible. I have zero judgment for anyone doing anything. But I don’t see myself resorting to it.”
Barrymore’s openness about her health journey offers valuable insight for those navigating similar experiences and aims to foster broader conversations on the importance of breast health and screenings.
